Training Ship Golden Bear Arriving in Honolulu

(Vallejo, California – May 26, 2017) – Students from California State University Maritime Academy will be sailing the Training Ship Golden Bear to Honolulu on Wednesday, May 30. The ship will arrive at the Honolulu Pilot Station at approximately 3:00 p.m. before docking at the Aloha Tower complex, on Pier 9. The area is open to the public and can be accessed by walking through the Aloha Tower complex or along Pier 8 on the Diamond Head side.

The annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime. For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime faculty, the ship's captain, the chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners. Other stops during the cruise include El Salvador and Seattle. Cadets have been executing drills in the waters around Hawaii since May 22.

During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes, and intellectual learning, applied technology, and leadership development blend daily as cadets apply what they have learned in the classroom, in the lab, and on the waterfront.

Cal Maritime has gained attention repeatedly for its highly-successful graduates. CNBC named Cal Maritime the number one public university in California, number one state maritime academy, and number ten university in the nation for alumni earnings. Also, a new study of millions of tax records by researchers at Brown, UC Berkeley, Stanford, and the U.S. Treasury determined that Cal Maritime was the California college with the most success in helping to transform students whose parents were in the bottom 20 percent of the income bracket into adults who are in the top 20 percent within a decade. The study is part of The Equality of Opportunity Project, which aims to measure upward income mobility.

Cal Maritime is one of six state maritime academies, and the only one located on the Pacific – serving not just California, but also Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, as well as students from many other states.
