JCRC Recognizes Cal Maritime, Camp Newman

 JCRC Award Recipients

(Vallejo, California – March 4, 2019) – California State University Maritime Academy and Union for Reform Judaism Camp Newman are the recipients of the Jewish Community Relations Council's Outstanding Community Partnership Award.

Cal Maritime hosted Camp Newman campers at the University's Vallejo campus last summer. The 2017 Tubbs Fire destroyed URJ Camp Newman's grounds, leaving devastated organizers scrambling to find a temporary home for the beloved camp.

Each summer Camp Newman hosts more than 1,500 Jewish youth ages 8 to 17 and more than 200 mentors and educators.

"I'm happy to see the work of so many people on our campus to help Camp Newman recognized," said Cal Maritime President Tom Cropper. "This partnership and friendship that developed between our staff and the Camp Newman staff and the campers was such that we were just going to find a way to accommodate these kids."

"The moment we stepped on the grounds, we felt a level of warmth and hospitality that I've rarely ever seen," said Ruben Arquilevich, executive director of URJ Camp Newman.

Organizers have already begun planning for Camp Newman's return to Cal Maritime this summer.
