Free Maritime Film Festival Returns with Eclectic Selection

(Vallejo, California – February 18, 2020) – California State University Maritime Academy's Maritime Film Festival is returning in March with its typically diverse selection of free movies with the common thread of aquatic-themed plots. This year's movies will feature mermaids, regattas, strange creatures, and Napoleonic-era naval battles.

March 4           Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World            
The 2003 epic period war-drama based on Patrick O'Brian's books and starring Russell Crowe.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Colin Dewey

March 11         Splash            
Classic 1984 comedy starring Daryl Hannah, Tom Hanks, and John Candy and directed by Ron Howard.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Amy Parsons

March 18         The Shape of Water                
Critically-acclaimed and award-winning 2017 romantic, dark fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Sarah Senk

March 25         Maiden
2019 documentary film about Tracy Edwards and the first all-woman crew to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
Guest Speaker: Sailing Director Erin Sprague

All movies will be introduced by Cal Maritime faculty and shown at 7 p.m. in Rizza Auditorium on the Cal Maritime campus. Free parking will be available in Lots A and D on the campus. For a map and directions, visit www.csum.edu/map.­­­

About Cal Maritime

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located in Vallejo, California, the campus serves approximately 1200 students and offers undergraduate degrees preparing students for careers in engineering, transportation, international relations, business, and global logistics. Cal Maritime also offers a master's degree in Transportation and Engineering Management, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses. Beginning in 2020, the University is adding an Oceanography major. Recently, the campus has garnered recognition for its high-achieving graduates – on average, the highest-earning alumni of any public university in California ten years after graduation.
