Office of the President
Welcome to the website for The California Maritime Academy, the smallest and certainly one of the most unique campuses of The California State University. Our campus is home to 850 students and approximately 200 faculty and staff.
Since I began my term as president more than a decade ago, I have been committed to making a fine institution even better. Working with a team of talented faculty and staff, we have done exactly that by:
- Recruiting the finest faculty who have a passion for teaching and bring real-world experiences into the classroom.
- Adding buildings, renovating facilities, and modernizing laboratory equipment in an amount exceeding $70 million.
- Opening the Maritime Simulation Center – by far the very finest in the United States – where we educate cadets and mariners and conduct research on important maritime-related issues.
- Providing a hands-on, project-based learning environment where students apply theory learned in the classroom to real-world problems.
- Doubling enrollment and increasing diversity; 35% of our students are underserved minorities and 18% are women. Many of these students are the first in their families to go to college.
- Developing new “non-licensed” degree programs that are still related to the maritime industry.
- Establishing the ABS School of Maritime Policy and Management, thanks to a generous $3 million charitable grant from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
- Setting new records for private support of the institution, which has helped sustain program quality and expand scholarship support for our cadets.
- Continuing to be recognized nationally by both U.S. News and World Report and Forbes magazines as among the top colleges in the country.
I am privileged to serve as president of Cal Maritime. It is arguably one of the finest maritime academies in the world, a reputation that has been earned by our dedicated faculty and staff, hard-working cadets, talented alumni, and the industry who has been generous in their support of our fine institution.
William B. Eisenhardt
