(VALLEJO, Calif. – June, 19, 2012) – Dr. William B. Eisenhardt, RADM, USMS, president of The California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), a campus of The California State University, has been honored with the Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement. The medal was presented to Eisenhardt by Maritime Administrator David Matsuda during the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Maritime Day celebration in May.

The Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement is a decoration of the United States Merchant Marine, awarded by the United States Maritime Administration. It was established in 2002 to recognize members of the maritime industry who have made extraordinarily valuable contributions to the merchant marine.

Eisenhardt, who is retiring at the end of June, received the honors for his extraordinary service as the President of the California Maritime Academy from July 2001 to June 2012.

During the National Maritime Day celebration, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (standing to Eisenhardt's left), delivered the keynote speech and praised the Merchant Marine stating that the White House views the Merchant Marine as a “vital building block” for a strong country.
