that gives undergraduate students access to our research and networks; build an endowment
with the goal of supporting scholars and faculty including visiting lecturers and
researchers, and more.
The Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative is dedicated to advancing comprehensive ocean literacy by leveraging Cal Maritime's expertise in maritime practice, its geographical location
on the shores of San Francisco bay, and its interdisciplinary faculty. Through our
distinguished Advisory Board and global network of affiliated scholars the institute will pursue the following initial goals:
Enhance Educational Excellence: Support faculty development and innovative programs and concentrations, such as
oceanic humanities and oceanic environmental studies, adding intellectual heft, maritime
relevance, and diversity to Cal Maritime’s undergraduate offerings.
Strengthen Research and Scholarship: Encourage interdisciplinary research that advances the fields of oceanic humanities,
ocean science and policy, and supports ocean management, conservation and stewardship.
Foster External Partnerships: Collaborate with academia, maritime operations, government and nongovernmental organizations,
and business leaders to integrate maritime knowledge into educational, outreach, and
research initiatives, encouraging diverse and practical solutions for oceans and waterways.
Promote Comprehensive Ocean Literacy: Position Cal Maritime as a global leader in oceanic research and scholarship, providing
ocean literate education emphasizing the interconnectedness of cultural, scientific,
and practical ocean knowledge.
