The Department of International Business and Logistics (IBL) offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration / International Business and Logistics.

The department also offers two minors- Business Administration and Law.

 

Career Opportunities for Majors

The institution enjoys an excellent reputation among employers; graduates of the business program work primarily, but not exclusively, for global businesses and in the logistics and transportation industries. Recent employers of our graduates include Maersk, C.H. Robinson, General Dynamics, NASSCO, GlobeRunners, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Divine Intermodal, Enterprise, APL, Tokio Marine Insurance and the Ports of Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma.

November 2023:

Students in MGT 420 class Students in MGT 420 class

Students in the International Business and Logistics (IBL) had the unique experience of getting deep insights into the intricate field of passenger transportation in the Bay Area from alumnus Robert Black of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Invited by Professor Khalid Bachkar to share his expertise in his supply chain management class (MGT 420), Robert illustrated the rich history and mission of BART while unveiling many career possibilities available for future IBL graduates.

Mele Tuimaunei, a senior student in the IBL program, expressed that Robert's presentation was "an incredibly eye-opening experience, showcasing the diverse destinations and work opportunities available to graduates of the IBL program here at Cal Maritime." Anjali Sharma, expected to graduate in the spring of 2024, echoed these sentiments, noting, "Robert Black provided comprehensive insights into BART, highlighting the advantages of Cal Maritime and illustrating how the institution greatly contributed to his success in the logistical field at BART."

November 2022:

Blue Tech Week, San Diego 2022

Blue Tech Week is finally here! Six students in Professor Neumann’s Marketing class spent over two months helping organize and market the 14th Annual Blue Tech Week conference in San Diego, CA. The conference, which began on November 14th, brings together world-class academics, domestic and international government agencies and cutting-edge BlueTech industry to focus on opening commercial opportunities, creating a cleaner planet, and facilitating global economic prosperity by providing innovative solutions to current critical ocean and water challenges. International Business and Logistics majors Anthony Duffy, Ryan Edmister, Michael Maes and Kahlai Pratt traveled to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography along with Professor Robert Neumann, to help with registration, logistics, and other arrangements for the conference. Conference organizers publicly recognized the efforts of the Cal Maritime cadets acknowledging that they would not have been able to pull it off without their help.

On Thursday, October 6th, six IBL cadets had the opportunity to attend a conversation between former Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice and former Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd about the latter’s new book, The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the U.S. and Xi Jinping’s China. Over 400 people attended the event, which was hosted by the Asia Society of Northern California. IBL student-volunteers helped the organizers with a variety of event-related logistics including registration, mic-running and traffic management. Mr. Rudd even interrupted his conversation with Dr. Rice to thank the students for their service! The event was especially memorable for first-year IBL student Marilee Zhu who had the opportunity to converse briefly with Mr. Rudd... in Chinese!

Eight students from the Department of International Business and Logistics (IBL), along with Professor Robert Neumann and Dean Steve Browne , traveled to Long Beach, CA to participate in the 2022 Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Expo. The Intermodal Expo is the most important event of the year for the intermodal industry bringing together over 2000 freight leaders and supply chain experts, showcasing exhibits of innovative products and services, and providing invaluable networking opportunities. We thank IANA for their generous financial support which made it possible for IBL cadets to attend this unique opportunity, meet industry representatives, and learn more career opportunities in the intermodal industry.

Ready to handle even the biggest ships" is the credo of Jacobsen Pilot Service, a family firm that has been operating in the Port of Long beach for almost a century. A small group of IBL cadets were fortunate enough to be given a tour of the port on a Jacobsen pilot boat by none other than the firm’s president, Cal Maritime alumnus Thomas Jacobsen, who explained that the firm provides piloting services for some of the world’s largest container ships and oil tankers –ships that carry billions of dollars of cargo into the Port of Long Beach.

 

November 2021:

On Friday, November 19, eight IBL and Global Studies students and faculty member Bob Neumann volunteered to assist and help organize the Japan Society Gala held at the San Francisco Opera House. The students were Lilly Maier, Idalis Olivares, Tiara Supakit (replacing Ben Tecker, who was unable to attend due to illness), Jillian Zahniser, Leilua Lualemaga, Grant Nakamura, and Sam Sniffen .  

The formal event was to honor the accomplishments of Moderna and Takeda Pharmaceuticals in combatting the Corona virus. Attending the event were the Consul General of Japan, Japan’s Undersecretary to the UN, The CEOs and executive staff of both Moderna and Takeda, and 160 members of the international business and cultural community in the Bay Area. 

The Japan Society greatly appreciated the professionalism, resourcefulness, and cheerful can-do attitude of our students, which was also noted by the attendees. 

 


October 2021:

Women In Logistics Scholarship Award 2021
Congratulations to Stanislav Allen and Lillian Maier, recipients of the 2021 “Women in Logistics” (WIL) scholarship.  Cadet Allen received the Grand Prize scholarship award and Cadet Maier received the runner-up scholarship award.  Per Associate Professor Joshua Shackman, Cadets Allen and Maier "are the fifth and sixth students of [his]...who won the scholarship [after he] encouraged [them] to apply and wrote their letters of recommendation."

IANA Expo 2021
IBL Cadets, Faculty Robert Neumann and Department Chair Steve Browne attended the IANA Expo 2021 in Long Beach.  IANA hosts the annual event to bring together industry experts, exhibits of the latest products/services and networking opportunities.  IANA awarded the IBL Department specific funds for Cal Maritime cadets to attend this unique opportunity, meet industry representatives, and learn more about their future careers.

Picture of Cadet CastilloCongratulations to Cadet Ricky Castillo on receiving the Major Service Award while serving as the Cadet Ambassador for the Cal Maritime Police Department.  Cadet Castillo demonstrated "...an outstanding professional presence when interacting with the public, campus community, and parents. His dedication to improving the campus and fostering a positive relationship between the Police Department and Corps of Cadets is evident in the variety of presentations and workshops he has been a part of. During his tenure with PD, he has increased the Cadet Bike Registration by 40% & streamlined the bi-annual employee parking permit program. The dedication, honor, integrity, respect, responsibility, and trust displayed by this cadet is in keeping with the highest traditions of California State University Maritime Academy and exemplifies the Corps Motto, 'To Work, To Fight, We are Ready.'"

IANA Scholarship Awards
:  Congratulations to the following IBL students awarded IANA scholarships for 2021: Irene Boncato, Christopher Eastman, Wen Xiang Li, Lillian Maier, Jorge Castillo Marroquin, Katherine Nguyen, Thanaphorn Supakit, and Nathaniel Young.  

Maritime Business Review:  Co-Authors Quinton Dai, Josh Tobin, Baxter Schumacher-Dowell (recent Cal Maritime graduates) and Associate Professor Joshua Shackman received notification their manuscript "The Interrelationship Between Ocean, Rail, Truck and Air Freight Rates" was accepted for publication in the Maritime Business Review.  The manuscript was based on a group project in Professor Shackman's Quantitative Methods course.

IANA Scholarships 2021
IBL students interested in careers in the intermodal transportation industry are eligible to apply for the 2021 scholarship from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). These scholarships are primarily for juniors and seniors who meet the GPA and needs criteria, and demonstrate their interest in a career in the intermodal industry.  The application can be accessed via the Cal Maritime AcademicWorks website .  The application deadline is April 19th.  Update:  Deadline extended until May 3rd!

IBL students interested in careers in the intermodal transportation industry are eligible to apply for significant and possibly renewable scholarships from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). Intermodal operators create the most efficient and effective transportation systems using ship, rail, and truck modes. These scholarships are primarily for juniors and seniors who meet the GPA and needs criteria, and demonstrate their interest in a career in the intermodal industry to IANA representatives and Cal Maritime faculty. IBL students are consistently awarded scholarships by Women in Logistics, along with the other scholarships that are available.
