EGL 200 - Introduction to Literature

Introduces the critical evaluation of literature in a variety of genres. Students will analyze major works of poetry, fiction, and drama and develop their written and oral communication skills in group discussions and frequent writing assignments.

 

EGL 305 - Twentieth-Century American Literature

Representative readings in American literature of the 20th century, with emphasis on those writers who have had the most significant influence on American literary thought and value.

 

EGL 309 - British Literature of the Sea

Survey of maritime literature of the British Empire from its colonial origins in the early Atlantic world to the modern period. The course will examine how "the sea" has played a central role in the formation of British culture.

 

EGL 310 - U.S. Literature of the Sea

Prerequisite(s): EGL 220

A survey of U.S. works of literature with a maritime focus. Students will explore and analyze the way "the sea" has been represented by American writers, particularly how U.S. maritime literature constructs a national identity and advances or critiques the nation-building enterprise.

 

EGL 315 - World Literature of the Sea

Prerequisite(s): EGL 220

Survey of global works of literature which are thematically categorized by their maritime focus. Students will explore and analyze the way "the sea" has been represented by international postcolonial writers in a variety of cultural texts, with particular attention paid to the sea as a site of global exchange and cultural memory.

 

EGL 320 - Literature of the Fantastic

Introduces students to a wide variety of literature and film with fantastical elements. Students will explore how writers, filmmakers, and other artists imagine fictional worlds in order to explore issues relevant to our own.

 

EGL 330 - Literature and Psychology

In this course students analyze how various psychological principles and theories may be applied to works of fiction, film, and visual arts. Students will join writers, filmmakers, and other artists in exploring how our minds work.

 

EGL 335 - Great Books

Survey of literature exploring the criteria that have defined humanity and humanity's relation to technology from 1700 to the present. Survey of foundational works of literature and criticism that have been influential in the development of "Western Culture," from classical through Renaissance and the long eighteenth century.

 

EGL 340 - Multicultural Literature in America

Introduction to the ethnic writing making up much of American literature, and the issues involved in defining the American canon.

 

HUM 325  - Globalization of Culture

Units: 3, GE Area: Upper Division C2 (Humanities)

Prerequisite(s): EGL 100

A study of globalization through the medium of culture. This course takes an historical-cultural studies approach to examine colonization, empire, postcolonialism, and emergent cultures in  the "global" era.

 

HUM 350 - Maritime Culture

Prerequisite(s): EGL 100

Interdisciplinary course exploring the theory of culture, maritime, & maritime culture as a subset of an evolving "Western" culture, through a variety of its products, including literature, painting, music, and film.
