Campus Transformation Continues with Groundbreaking for Physical Education and Aquatics Center

(VALLEJO, CA – April 13, 2013)  – The ceremony is complete, and the work has begun. Groundbreaking for the new Physical Education and Aquatics Center at The California Maritime Academy was held April 12.

The new center will replace Mayo Hall, built in 1945, when student population was around 200. Construction of the new center will address the shortage of space for the Academy’s physical education and licensing preparation programs.

President Cropper told groundbreaking attendees to “believe.” “Believe that what you’re doing today will affect the lives of cadets for the next 50 years,” he said.

“Sports unite a community,” said Erik Hanson, a junior forward on the men’s basketball team. “This new gym will allow more people to become a part of the Cal Maritime family.”

The 76,000 square foot center will include:

• An Olympic size swimming pool with bleachers
• A survival training platform with hoist
• A main gymnasium with one basketball court, three full-size volleyball courts, and seating for 650
• An auxiliary gymnasium with a full-size volleyball court and half-size basketball court
• A full cardio exercise room
• A full free-weight and circuit training room
• An athletic training and rehab center
• Three conference rooms
• Ten faculty offices
The new facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.
