My name is Jimmy Moore, and I am serving as the Interim Commandant of Cadets for Cal
Maritime. I have a long history in the Maritime business and was a graduate of Cal
Maritime in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation/3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage United States Coast Guard license. I am truly looking forward
to working with everyone and feel I will thrive in this role helping out the community.
I currently hold a 2nd Mate Unlimited tonnage, and 1600 ton USCG Master’s license.
Born and raised in Southern California I worked with the Scouts on Catalina Island
as a counselor for most of my young life. I found out about Cal Maritime after talking
to a recent graduate from the school who also worked for the same Scout camp on Catalina
Island. Once I was accepted into the academy my life changed forever for the better.
After graduation I sailed for Military Sealift Command; worked for the Master’s Mate’s
and Pilots Union on a few Containerships and Car Carriers; then for the Alcatraz Cruises
ferry; and most recently have been employed working at Cal Maritime as an instructor
in the Maritime Logistics, Transportation & Management. At this point in my life,
I have sailed to almost every continent on the planet and am always looking to expand
my horizons even further every day. My experience in the industry and through the
Alumni community with Cal Maritime will play into my new role here on campus.
In my role as the Interim Commandant of Cadets at Cal Maritime I hope to bring empathy
and understanding to the office in addition to enforcing the regulations that help
form good leaders. Students who graduate from the school come out of this program
as well-rounded members of society. The leadership experience you will gain through
this program is inequivalent to most other programs throughout the world, and I hope
to be an influential part of this program. I have worked on the campus for the last
few years and understand the hardships as well as triumphs the students have had to
endure.
I truly do love the Maritime community. It is unbelievably incredible to go to almost
any part of the world, and run into colleagues and friends wherever I travel. The
friends I made at the school as a student are now lifelong friends. Making these connections
throughout my own life will help guide me in providing an environment where others
can do so as well. I hope to bring that adventure for the sea, and maritime business
world abroad back to the school.
My office is located in the Student Center next to the Commandants Office by the mailroom.
You will probably see me out and about engaging with the community, but don’t hesitate
to stop by for anything and everything that might be on your mind. I have a vast experience
with the hardships students go through in the industry and always offer an empathic
ear to those in need. I will also be living on campus with my wife Jessica who is
a recent graduate from Washington State university along with our two cats Rainy(after
Mt. Rainier) and Boomer.
