Today we were met with some clouds and a moderate breeze. We are sailing around (circumnavigating)  the Islands of Lanai, Maui, and Kaho’olawe. When we went past the North Shore of Maui we took the “Aquatic Road to Hana.” This provided some amazing landscapes and beautiful green cliffs.

Cadets on the bridge were busy piloting us through the route. This allows the cadets to move the vessel based on visual contacts and radar readings. One of the cadets has an important job to ensure we know what time it is. It is common on military vessels, that a bell is rung over the P.A. to denote the time. It is rung on the hour and every half hour. The number times the bell is rung will correlate with the time on the ship and after 4 hours and 8 bells the count resets. We also blow the whistle at noon which gives all watch personnel and crew an opportunity to set their time pieces.

As our day draws to a close, we are met with some heavier winds and some foreboding clouds. Everyone is in good spirits as we are just a few days away from Honolulu.
