Thank you for your interest in Cal Maritime’s School of Maritime Transportation, Logistics & Management (MTLM). If you are a returning student, welcome back! If you are a prospective student, I hope you consider joining us for your college experience. Cal Maritime is truly a wonderful place and I am thankful that I get to work on this beautiful campus with our enthusiastic and talented students and accomplished faculty colleagues.

As an 18+ year veteran of Cal Maritime, I can speak to the first-class educational opportunities waiting for you in MTLM. Our programs in International Business and Logistics (IBL), Marine Transportation (MT), and Naval Science (NS) offer a rare combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on learning. Our students enjoy small classes and your professor will probably know you by name. Our faculty have real world experience and are recognized experts in their fields. Most of our graduates go on to successful and lucrative careers in the Maritime and related industries.

Our methods are recognized off campus, as well. Our programs are accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), and are fully compliant with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). In 2022, US News has, once again, ranked us as the #1 Public School in the West and, according to Money.com, we are the 15th best university in the nation, ranked by value.

Captain Steve Browne

Despite growing up amidst the cornfields of Iowa, Captain Steve Browne has spent much of his life aboard ships. His steps were first drawn to the sea when he was offered a Navy ROTC scholarship to Northwestern University, where he earned a BA in Computer Studies and a Masters of Engineering Management. After graduation, he spent eight years in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer and then jumped ship to the US Merchant Marine, serving, ultimately, as Master of the passenger ship MV Doulos. 

He joined the Marine Transportation (MT) faculty at Cal Maritime in 2004 and worked his way up to Professor and served as Chair of MT, as well as Chair of International Business and Logistics. He is the author of Nautical Rules of the Road, 4th edition, and numerous academic papers in the field of Maritime Education and Training. Since 2022, he has served as Dean of the School of Maritime Transportation, Logistics & Management.
