(Vallejo, California – June 5, 2020) – Dr. Lori Schroeder has been appointed provost of California State University Maritime Academy. The announcement was made today by Cal Maritime President Tom Cropper following a five-month, national search.

Dr. Schroeder currently serves as the provost and dean of the college and professor of English at Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana. She will assume her new role at Cal Maritime on August 1, 2020 in time for the beginning of the new school year.

“Dr. Schroeder is a proven campus leader,” said President Cropper. “With a strong background in communication and shared governance, I believe she is the ideal person to lead our faculty through the current challenges of COVID-19 and next phase of our academic strategic plan.”

Prior to Franklin College, Schroeder served as the associate dean of the college at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois from 2010 to 2017. She began teaching English at Knox in 1996 and became the department chair in 2003. She also previously taught at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, the University of Illinois and the University of Denver.

As provost at Cal Maritime, Dr. Schroeder will be the senior academic administrator for a program which is continually ranked as one of the best public colleges in the western region and in the top third among all regional colleges by U.S. News and World Report. The U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard ranks Cal Maritime first among public California universities for graduate earnings 10 years after enrollment. The Academy is also one of only 15 four-year colleges in the U.S. that received a perfect score for “value added” to student outcomes in a recent study by the Brookings Institute.

Dr. Schroeder earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Purdue University, a Master of Arts in English literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Denver.
