Ways to Give

Some donors appreciate the simplicity of making a direct gift of cash. Others prefer to make a bequest in their will or trust that will benefit generations to come. Still others might consider making a gift of real estate or stock. Whatever your preference, every gift to The California Maritime Academy is greatly appreciated. Here are just a few ways to make a difference in the University.

If you have questions on the variety of giving options, please contact Robert Arp, Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Director of The California Maritime Academy Foundation at (707) 654-1037.

Check, Credit Card or Cash

Donations of cash are the simplest and most direct way to give to Cal Maritime and are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Checks must be made payable to "The California Maritime Academy Foundation," write the department, program or fund you wish to donate to on the memo line and send the check to:

You may also make a credit card donation either as a one-time payment or in multi-month increments. To make a credit card payment by phone, contact the Foundation Office at (707) 654-1246.

Tax-wise Giving

With thoughtful planning, it is possible to make a gift to Cal Maritime and receive a range of individual financial benefits, including reduced taxes, additional retirement income, and more. Tax-wise giving opportunities at Cal Maritime include:

  • Gifts of Appreciated Securities: Donating publicly traded stocks and bonds or closely held stock and business assets usually provides a double tax benefit, significantly reducing the cost of your gift to the Academy. Since Cal Maritime will pay no capital gains tax when selling the securities, your gift is actually worth more to us, allowing you to make a bigger impact.

  • Charitable Bequests: It is easier than you may think to plan a gift through your will or living trust, or via a beneficiary designation on your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), 401k, or other financial account. Charitable bequests cost you nothing during your life, they can be changed if your needs change, and they can minimize potential estate costs and taxes. The specific focus of your gift can be detailed in a simple document.

  • Charitable Gift Annuities: Gift annuities allow you to make a gift now and receive a stable, fixed-income for the rest of your life. They can be set up to provide income this year or as a retirement planning strategy to meet future needs, and they come with multiple tax benefits.

  • Gifts of Real Estate and Personal Property: It is often possible to unlock the value of your real estate, while eliminating property management hassles, reducing capital gains and income tax burdens, and helping Cal Maritime.

  • Yacht Donations: The Marine Development Committee will evaluate each boat's utility to the University's program. Donated yachts may be sold, after an appropriate interval, by the Foundation to provide funds for scholarships, and other significant educational opportunities. A portion of the sale of a yacht will be used to establish a named endowment in honor of the donor. Click here for more information on donating your yacht or vessel to Cal Maritime.

  • Gifts of Needed Equipment: A gift of needed equipment is a tangible item, which once donated can either be used by the university or eventually sold to an outside party (where proceeds are then applied to philanthropic programs). Unlike gifts of cash and securities, such gifts allow a donor to receive the benefit or charitable contribution without drawing on cash flow and cash reserves. They also provide the University substantial value.
