Canvas Transition Timeline

Why Canvas?

Cal Maritime will begin the transition of its primary LMS from BrightSpace to Canvas starting Fall 2022. The two systems will run alongside one another during Spring, Summer, and Fall, with Canvas, fully implemented next Spring 2024. BrightSpace will not be available for live courses after Fall 2023. Canvas will position Cal Maritime for the future by supporting its pedagogical needs, mobile features, and complying with accessibility requirements.

Moving To The New Canvas Learning Management System

  • Beginning in Spring 2023, faculty can choose to teach with Canvas or BrightSpace.
  • All course shells will be added to Canvas & BrightSpace in the Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. You choose which LMS you want to use and inform your students of your choice. You can safely ignore the course shell you are not using.
  • The "Instructor of Record" will have a Course Shell in Canvas only - starting Spring 2024.
  • 24/7 support, for faculty, is available within Canvas > (?) Help Button.

Sandbox Shells

Beginning in Fall 2022, "sandbox" shells will be created for each instructor within the "Sandbox" sub-account (folder) on our Canvas site. These are available for you to try out various features of Canvas without needing to use a real course. Sandbox courses can be reset to their default layout at any time and sandbox content can easily be imported into a live course with only a few clicks.

If you would like an additional Test (Sandbox) shell, you can request one via the additional sandbox shell request form.

Canvas Release Notes
