New Student Common Reading Program

I hope you have received your complimentary copy of--Know My Name: A Memoir by Chanel Miller, this year’s common read book. Please, finish reading this book by Orientation Week. You will have the opportunity to meet with faculty and other students as part of our “New Student Common Reading Program” and discuss this year’s common read book during orientation. In this program, all incoming students, participating faculty, and students read the same book prior to arriving on campus. The overall goal of the New Student Common Reading Program is to acquaint incoming cadets with Cal Maritime’s academic environment, to initiate relationships among cadets and the rest of the campus community, to introduce you to college-level academic discussion, and to inspire a lifelong love of intellectual learning. Trigger Warning (the book has sexual assault and suicidal thoughts). Be prepared to discuss the book with your new Cal Maritime community.

If you have not received the book or have any questions, please email Dr. Aparna Sinha, Chair Common Read Program, asinha@csum.edu.

Athletics

Congratulations on your admission to California State University Maritime Academy!

With its 15 intercollegiate programs, Cal Maritime Athletics provides outstanding opportunities to enhance your undergraduate experience, maintain positive physical, mental and emotional health, in addition to strengthening interpersonal and leadership skills that are necessary to thrive in any professional environment once cadets earn their degree.

Of its 15 sports, eight compete in the NAIA as members of the California Pacific Conference (men’s/women’s basketball, men’s/women’s cross country, men’s/women’s golf, and men’s/women’s soccer); another seven operate under respective governing bodies (men’s/women’s crew, men’s rugby, co-ed dinghy/offshore sailing and men’s/women’s water polo).

If you are interested in joining a team that competes in the FALL — men’s/women’s cross country, men’s/women’s crew, men’s/women’s golf, men’s rugby, co-ed dinghy/offshore sailing, men’s/women’s soccer or men’s water polo — it is imperative you contact appropriate head coaches (see list with respective e-mail addresses below) as soon as possible to complete medical paperwork, fulfill all requirements and become eligible to compete before the start of the season.

Even though athletic backgrounds vary with each sport, do not let that deter you from expressing interest! Numerous cadets are multi-sport athletes; most of those individuals possessed minimal experience within their secondary sport, embraced a new challenge and fully committed themselves towards reaching their individual potential! Many cadets who are walk-ons have taken on essential roles on their teams!

Every coach understands the academic rigors faced by cadets in all majors and will work with you to create appropriate accommodations to maintain a healthy and sustainable balance. The support system provided by Athletics’ cadet-athletes, coaches and staff will help you build life-long friendships and enjoy the ideal combination of elite academics, first-class athletics and personal growth throughout your undergraduate career.

Cal Maritime Athletics is looking forward to meeting members of the incoming class and excited to receive your inquiries, throughout the summer, regarding the benefits of becoming a university ambassador as a member of one of its 15 teams. Do not hesitate to meet your future coach by using the contact information provided below and submitting an online recruiting questionnaire for your sport of choice.

Welcome to Cal Maritime, go Keelhaulers!

Consider The Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP) at Cal Maritime

One of the unique opportunities available to students attending Cal Maritime is the chance to subsidize the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, and living expenses up to $32,000 in exchange for committing service part time to the United States Navy Reserve through the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP). The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to this program.

The SSMP builds and strengthens the bond between the U.S. Navy and the civilian, U.S. flagged vessels and crew also known as the Merchant Marine. As licensed merchant mariners in their civilian careers, Strategic Sealift Officers serve two weeks per year on active duty as an essential link between commercial and naval vessel operations. Missions can range from providing secure communications as a Tactical Advisor on a merchant ship, to providing engineering expertise during the build and repair of some of the world’s most technically advanced naval vessels.

The SSMP at Cal Maritime is proud to be a part of this effort. Students pursuing a Coast Guard license degree track (required for those majoring in marine transportation and marine engineering technology, but optional for those majoring in mechanical engineering) may apply to participate in the SSMP. This is a unique program focused on training college students in the disciplines of leadership, physical fitness, and military sciences as a Navy Midshipman. Upon graduation and completion of the program, Midshipmen receive a commission as a Naval Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve (allowing for concurrent civilian employment). Opportunities are also available to pursue a commission as an Officer on Active Duty in any service branch.

Eligible students can receive an appointment as a Midshipman, and those actively participating in the program may apply for a stipend of $32,000 over four years as part of the Student Incentive Payment (SIP) program.

Interested freshmen and transfer students apply for acceptance into the SSMP through a competitive selection process looking at medical qualification, physical aptitude, and academic aptitude. Medical qualification is determined through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) as well as the Coast Guard physical required for license track students (students are encouraged to complete both prior to arrival on campus). Physical aptitude will be assessed with a Body Composition Assessment and Navy Physical Readiness Test (planks, push-ups, 1.5 mile run) administered at the beginning of the fall semester. Academic aptitude will be assessed by reviewing standardized test scores and previous academic performance.

The purpose of the unit is to develop Navy Midshipmen “morally, mentally, and physically” in order to commission successful Naval Officers. Enrollment in the program includes three required Naval Science classes as well as ongoing physical fitness training and leadership development. Should you choose to join the SSMP, be prepared to work hard and adhere to the Navy’s Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

Please visit the SSMP webpage at csum.edu/ssop for more information on academic requirements, physical fitness requirements, age requirements, service obligations, or SIP. If you wish to ask questions about the program, feel free to contact the Naval Science SSO Instructor LT William Brickham at wbrickham@csum.edu or HR Assistant Ms. Antonia Vasquez at avasquez@csum.edu.

As a reminder, all incoming cadets should review the online material that their major (e.g. programs) have posted in the 2021 Academic (Online) Orientation on Brightspace prior to coming to campus.  It has information about faculty, course roadmaps, registration, advising, and more.  You can use the link above or login at csum.brightspace.com.   Use the same CSUM login as your email and other campus services.

If you have questions or problems accessing the materials or Brightspace, please email academictechnology@csum.edu

Access Brightspace using your CSUM log-in information:
